Books To Read This Christmas

This Christmas holidays you may have some free time on your hands. Here are a few books that you might want to take a look at this season.

1. Great Expectations

This has been adapted multiple times. The novel by Charles Dickens has become a winter classic. A local poor boy has his life transformed by a mysterious gentleman. As well as this, there is the eccentric woman Miss Havisham who is intent on hurting men for what they did to her and plans to use Estella to do so.






2. Wuthering Heights

 This book is often mentioned in books and films, as the novel that characters tend to read over and over annually at this time of year. It is Emily Brontë's only novel and tells the story of Cathy and Heathcliff. This story is one of love and revenge to the backdrop of the Yorkshire Moors. 







3. A Christmas Carol
Charles Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROLEvery year this is made into something different. It has been featured on Doctor Who and in one of Victoria Wood's Christmas shows. The story of past, present and future. One bitter man sees what he was, who he is now and what he will become. 






4. Northern Lights
Philip Pullman Northern Lights book coverThe series by Philip Pullman became a popular movie starring Nicole Kidman but the book is definitely better. The book features the journey of Lyra Bevacqua searching for her missing friend Roger Parslow in the Arctic as well as discovering the true meaning of Lord Asriel's 'Dust'. 









5. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

For all those fans of John Green, Maureen Johnson or Lauren Myracle (or all three) this book is the best book for you. This compilation novel comprises three separate stories that intertwine with one another. The three stories are: 'The Jubilee Express' by Maureen Johnson, 'A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle' by John Green, and 'The Patron Saint of Pigs' by Lauren Myracle. The book follows three different teenagers as they experience a huge snow storm in the town of Gracetown. 



7. Little Women
This classic follows the lives of four sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy March. It details their lives as they go from childhood to womanhood. It is a romance, it is a quest and it has been described as a family drama that validates virtue over wealth. It is also a definite favourite of Rachel from 'Friends' and later Joey. 






8. The Polar Express
The Polar ExpressChris Van Allsburg wrote and illustrated this book and was praised for its detailed illustrations and calm, relaxing storyline. It shows the truth of Christmas, and how one boy learns to believe in Christmas once again.
